Sen. Themístocles Sampaio, president of Piauí’s Legislative Assembly in Brazil, presented an award to Dr. Alfred Frederick (left), Distinguished Service Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at SUNY Oswego, during a March 14 ceremony held at the state Legislative Assembly of Piauí. The award named him Citizen of the State of Piauí for his quarter-century of contributions to educational development in the northeastern Brazilian state and other regions in Brazil. Frederick has received international acclaim as a scholar focused on bringing people together across ethnic and cultural boundaries through education.
